Aquino Jordani Study Guide for Finals

What is Astronomy? Deals with space and the physical universe as a whole.
How old is the universe? 13.8 billion years.
Describe the 3 laws of Kepler? 1st law: All planets mve around the sun. 2nd law: The radius sweeps out equal equal areas in equal lengths of time. 3rd law:
What is red shift? Object or light moving away from the observer.
What is blue shift? Object or light moving towards the observer.
What are stars made of? Stars are made of gas and dust.
What is EM Spectrum? It is radiation, radiation is energy that travels and spreads out as it goes.
What is the difference from apparent brightness/magnitude and absolute brightness/magnitude? Apparent brightness is being seen and absolute brightness is the measure of luminosity of celestial objects.
What is a black hole? A region of space having a gravitational field that no light or air can escape.
Whats a light year? A unit of astronomy distance equavelent to the distance light travels in a year.
What is cosmology? ` The science origin and development of the universe.
What is sunspot? A spot or patch appearing from time to time on the suns surface.
Whats a white dwarf? A small very dense star that is typically the size of a planet.
What is a wavelength? The distance from sucessive creast of a wave.
What is galaxy? A system of million and billion of stars together with gas and dust.
What is solar system? The collection of 8 stars and their moons orbiting the sun.
What is solar flare? A brief eruption of intense high-energy radiation from the suns surface.
What is a Red Giant? A very large star with high luminosity and low surface temperature.
What is a neutron star? A celestial object of very small radius.
What is a Gas Giant? A large planet with low density consisting of hydrogen and helium.
