Weathering

QuestionAnswer
Frost Action The force of freezing water splits rocks apart.
Abrasion Wearing away of rocks by wind or water.
Gravity As rocks fall, they collide with each other and break apart.
Organic Activity When roots grow or animals dig holes, rocks split apart.
Acid Precipitation Rain, sleet, or snow that contains a high concentration of acid.
Exfoliation The peeling of rounded thin layers from the rock's surface.
Hydrolysis The chemical reaction of water with other substances.
Plant Acids Acids formed by the decay of plants and animals that eat away rocks.
Oxidation The chemical reaction of oxygen with other substances. (Rust is an example)
Carbonation Carbonic acids dissolves rocks and caves form underground.
Sulfuric Acid Pollution from factories dissolves in rainwater and eats away at rocks and buildings.
