---|---|
Biochemistry | relating to the chemical processes and substances which occur within living organisms. |
Element | each of more than one hundred substances that cannot be chemically interconverted or broken down into simpler substances and are primary constituents of matter |
Compound | a thing that is composed of two or more separate elements; a mixture. |
Organic compounds | An organic compound is any member of a large class of gaseous, liquid, or solid chemical compounds whose molecules contain carbon. |
Inorganic compounds: | An inorganic compound is any compound that lacks a carbon atom, for lack of a more in-depth definition. |
Carbohydrates | Any of a large group of organic compounds occurring in foods and living tissues and including sugars, starch, and cellulose. |
Lipids | Any of a class of organic compounds that are fatty acids or their derivatives and are insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents. |
Proteins | Large molecules composed of one or more chains of amino acids in a specific order determined by the base sequence of nucleotides in the DNA coding for the protein. |
Enzymes | A substance produced by a living organism that acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction. |
Nucleic acids | A complex organic substance present in living cells, especially DNA or RNA, whose molecules consist of many nucleotides linked in a long chain. |
Hydrolysis | The chemical breakdown of a compound due to reaction with water. |
Synthesis | The production of chemical compounds by reaction from simpler materials. |
pH | A figure expressing the acidity or alkalinity of a solution on a logarithmic scale on which 7 is neutral, lower values are more acid, and higher values more alkaline. |
