| atom | is the smallest particle of matter that has the properties of that matter |
| chemical property and chemical reaction | a characteristic of matter than can be observed only when matter is changed into a new kind of matter. |
| mass | the amount of matter within the object |
| density | this is the physical property that describes how much mass is in a given space or volume |
| matter | is anything that has mass and takes up space |
| metric system | a scientific measurement system based on units of 10 |
| molecule | a particle of matter made up of two or more atoms joined together |
| physical properties | size, shape, color, and texture are examples of features your senses can describe |
| states of matter | are the three forms that matter usually take. Solid, liquid, and gas |
| volume | the amount of space matter takes up |
| weight | the measure of the pull of gravity on an objects mass |
| dissolve | to mix completely with another substance to form a solution |
| energy | the ability to cause change |
| heat | is a transfer of thermal energy from a hot region to a cold region |
| mixture | matter made of two or more substances or materials that are physically combined |
| physical change | a change in size, shape, or state of matter that does not result in a new kind of matter |
| product | a new substance formed from a chemical reaction |
| reactant | a substance that enters a chemical reaction |
| solution | a mixture in which the particles of one kind of matter are mixed evenly with the particles of other kinds of matter |
| temperature | a measure of how hot or cold something is |
| thermal energy | the total energy of tiny moving particles of matter |
