TermDefinition
atom is the smallest particle of matter that has the properties of that matter
chemical property and chemical reaction a characteristic of matter than can be observed only when matter is changed into a new kind of matter.
mass the amount of matter within the object
density this is the physical property that describes how much mass is in a given space or volume
matter is anything that has mass and takes up space
metric system a scientific measurement system based on units of 10
molecule a particle of matter made up of two or more atoms joined together
physical properties size, shape, color, and texture are examples of features your senses can describe
states of matter are the three forms that matter usually take. Solid, liquid, and gas
volume the amount of space matter takes up
weight the measure of the pull of gravity on an objects mass
dissolve to mix completely with another substance to form a solution
energy the ability to cause change
heat is a transfer of thermal energy from a hot region to a cold region
mixture matter made of two or more substances or materials that are physically combined
physical change a change in size, shape, or state of matter that does not result in a new kind of matter
product a new substance formed from a chemical reaction
reactant a substance that enters a chemical reaction
solution a mixture in which the particles of one kind of matter are mixed evenly with the particles of other kinds of matter
temperature a measure of how hot or cold something is
thermal energy the total energy of tiny moving particles of matter
