1A Astronomy Vocab

TermDefinition
Astronomy The study of sky, space and the universe.
Big Bang Theory The theory of the expansion of the universe over time.
Red Shift A shifting of spectral lines towards longer wavelengths in radiation from galaxies.
Blue Shift Shift of spectrum in shorter wavelengths in the light that comes from celestial objects.
Frequency Rate that vibration occurs that constitutes waves.
Wavelength The distance between the peaks of a wave.
Absolute Brightness How bright a star appears at a certain distance of years or parsecs.
Apparent Brightness The brightness of a star that is seen from Earth.
Cosmic Microwave Background A glow of light that fills the universe that falls on Earth from every direction.
Universe Existing matter and space.
Galaxy A system of many stars, gas and dust that is held together from the attraction of gravity.
Electromagnetic Spectrum Wavelength or frequency range over which electromagnetic radiation extends.
Astronomical Unit A measurement equal to 149.6 million km, which is the mean distance from the Earths center to the Suns center.
Light Year Astronomical distance that is the equal to the distance that light travels in one year.
Cosmology The science of the development and origin of the universe.
