TermDefinition
Astronomy The study of the moon, stars, and other objects in space
Doppler shift a change in frequency
Red shift towards you
Blue shift away from you
frequency the number of complete wavelengths that pass a point in a given time
Cosmology study of the universe
Wavelength The distance between two parts of a wave
Absolute Brightness/magnitude the brightness a star would have if it were at a standard distance from earth
Apparent Brightness/magnitude how bright a star appears from earth
Cosmic Microwave Background Thermal radiation left over from the Big Bang
Universe All of space and everything in it
Galaxy A collection of stars, dust, and gas bound together by gravity
Star a fixed luminous point in the night sky that is a large, remote incandescent body like the sun.
Planet a celestial body moving in an elliptical orbit around a star.
Electromagnetic Spectrum the range of wavelengths/frequencies over which electromagnetic radiation extends.
Astronomical Unit AU, the average distance between the earth and the sun
Solar Nebula A large cloud of gas and dust such as the one that formed our solar system
Gas Giant The name given to the first four outer planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune
Nuclear Fusion The process by which two or more small nuclei fuse to make a bigger nucleus
Convective Zone region of the sun where gases circulate in currents, bringing the sun's energy to the surface
Photosphere The inner layer of the sun's atmosphere
Constellations a group of stars that forms an imaginary outline or patterns
Chromosphere The middle layer of the sun's atmosphere
Corona The outer layer of the sun's atmosphere.
Sunspot a cooler darker spot appearing on the sun's photo sphere
Prominence loop of gas that stick out from the sun's surface, linking parts of sunspot regions
Solar Flare sudden eruption of intense high energy radiation from the sun's surface
Coronal Mass Ejection a large explosion of matter and energy from the Sun
Parallax the effect where the position/direction of an object appears to differ when viewed from different positions
Main Sequence a series of star types to which most stars belong
HR Diagram A graph relating the temperature and brightness of stars
Nebula A large cloud of dust and gas in space
Red Giant A star that expands and cools once it runs out of hydrogen fuel
White Dwarf a small very dense star that is typically the size of a planet
Nova a star that increases thousands of times in brightness and then fades
Neutron Star the small, dense remains of a high-mass star after a supernova
Pulsar a rapidly spinning neutron star that emits rapid pulses of radio and optical energy
Black Hole there is one at the center of every galaxy and have so much gravitational pull that even light can't escape its pull

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
