Life Science Vocab about Living Things

biosphere life supporting zone at or near the earth's surface
atmosphere an envelope of gasses that the earth is surrounded by
cell basic unit of living thing that can perform all of life's processes
metabolism the constant balance of energy within an organism (eneregy taken in and energy used)
stimulus a change that occurs in the environment
endothermic an animal that can maintain a constant body temperture
ectothermic an animal that has a body temperture that changes according to enviromental changes
competition a struggle among living things to get proper amount of food, water,and energy in a living space
homeostasis the ability of an organisism to keep conditions inside its body the same even though conditions in the environment may change
