Unit 6 - Water on Earth

| polarity | anything that has a positive charge at one end and a negative charge at the other end |
| cohesion | the property that holds molecules of a substance together |
| adhesion | the property that holds molecules of different substances together |
| specific heat | the energy needed to heat a substance by a particular amount |
| solvent | a liquid that dissolves substances.....water is often called the universal solvent |
| ocean current | streamlike movements of water in the ocean |
| surface current | ocean currents that occur at or near the surface caused by wind |
| coriolis effect | the deflection of moving objects from a straight path due to Earth's rotation |
| deep current | movements of ocean water far below the surface |
| convection current | movement of water that results from the difference in the density of water |
| upwelling | when warm surface water is replaced by cold nutrient-rich water from deeper ocean waters |
| surface water | water above Earth's surface |
| groundwater | water found in spaces between rock particles below Earth's surface |
| water table | the upper boundary, or surface, of groundwater |
| channel | a path that a stream follows |
| tributary | a smaller stream that feeds into a river and eventually into a river system |
| watershed | the area of land that is drained by a river system |
| divide | a ridge or an area of higher ground that separates watersheds |
| aquifer | a body of rock or sediment that stores groundwater and allows it to flow |
| wetland | an area of land that is soaked with water for at least part of the year |
| estuary | the partially enclosed area where fresh water from the river mixes with the salt water from the ocean |
| abiotic factor | a nonliving factor in an environment (water temp, water depth, light, pH, Oxygen) |
