| Weathering | the wearing away of sediments by water, waves, wind or ice |
| Erosion | The moving or carrying away of sediments to a new location |
| Deposition | The dropping of sediments to a new location |
| Cementation | Sticking together like glue |
| Compaction | The pressure of pressing together sediments |
| Sedimentary rock | Rock made by the deposits of sediments that form layers. This kind of rock is where most fossils are found. |
| Soil | The upper layer of Earth consisting of a mixture of organic remains, rocks and clay particles |
| Gravel | Smaller stones, pebbles of rock, no water stays, no nutrients |
| Properties of Soil | All soil contains mineral particles, sand, silt, shells and clay particles. Also they have organic matter, water and air. |
| Particles | Very small in size, tiny, a speck, crumb |
| Retain | To keep in or hold back |
| Sediment | Particles of matter that could be sand, silt, shell and other substances that are carried then deposited. |
