Osteoarthritis most common form of arthritis, affects weight bearing joints.
Osteoarthritis sometimes called the "wear and tear" disease or DJD
Osteoarthritis Degeneration of articular cartilage with hypertrophy of the underlying and adjacent bone.
Osteoarthritis bone surfaces rub together and bone grows as bone spurs
Osteoarthritis bony nodules called Heberden's nodes and Bouchard's node
Medical Diagnosis Plain x-rays may not show cartilage abnormalities
Signs and Symptoms usually affects a single joint or only a few joints
Arthroplasty total joint replacement
Most common joint replacement hip and the knees
6 P's pain, pallor, parasthesia, pulselessness, paralysis, and poikilothermy
parasthesia no sensation
poikilothermy hot infection, cold no circulation
NSAIDS aleve, ibprophen, bc power
replaced hips must be kept in a position of abduction
affected leg kept in abduction to prevent dislocation
instruct patients not to cross legs or flex hips more than 90 degrees true
instruct patient not to cros legs or flex hips more than 45 degrees false
CPM continuous passive motion
CPM hips flexion 30* or less, knee flexion less 90*
