Ecosytem Energy
Energy flow in ecosystems; food chains & food webs
| Term | Definition |

| Energy | The power needed for an an organism to grow, reproduce, and move. |
| Matter | The nutrients that are recycled through a food web |
| Energy pyramid | A diagram that shows how energy is transferred through an ecosystem. |
| Food web | All of the feeding relationships in an ecosystem |
| Food chain | One set of feeding relationships in an ecosystem |
| Trophic levels | The different feeding positions of organisms in a food chain or food web. |
| Biomass | The amount of living matter in a trophic level. |
| Biomagnification | The increase in toxins as it is passed along the different trophic levels of a food chain |
| Autotroph or Producer | An organism that makes its own food using energy |
| Consumer or Heterotroph | An organism that relies on other organisms for food |
| Chemotroph | An organism that makes food using chemical energy |
| Herbivore | An organism that eats plants |
| Omnivore | An organism that eats plants and meat |
| Carnivore | An organism that eats meat |
| Primary consumers | Organisms in the first feeding level of an energy pyramid; the herbivores |
| Secondary consumers | Organisms in the second level of an energy pyramid; the carnivores or omnivores |
| Tertiary consumers | Organisms in the third feeding level of an energy pyramid; the carnivores and omnivores. |
| Decomposers | Organisms like bacteria and fungi that break down other organisms and recycle the matter |
| Population | All of the individuals of the same species living in an area |
| Community | All of the populations of organisms living an area |
| Ecosystem | All of the living organisms in an area and the nonliving parts that affect them |
