Effects of Drugs

Chap. 35

QuestionAnswer

THE EFFECT OF A DRUG THAT IS UNINTENDED IS CALLED A SIDE EFFECT
TRUE OR FALSE. SIDE EFFECTS ARE USUALLY PREDICTABLE AND MAY BE EITHER HARMFUL OR POTENTIALLY HARMFUL? FALSE. MAY BE EITHER HARMLESS OR POTENTIALLY HARMFUL
SIDE EFFECT IS ALSO CALLED SECONDARY EFFECT
THIS EFFECT MAY JUSTIFY THE DISCONTINUATION OF A DRUG ADVERSE EFFECTS
THIS EFFECT RESULTS FROM OVERDOSAGE, INGESTION OF A DRUG INTENDED FOR EXTERNAL USE, AND BUILDUP OF THE DRUG IN THE BLOOD BECAUSE OF IMPAIRED METABOLISM OR EXCRETION DRUG TOXICITY
WHAT IS THE DURATION OF TIME IT TAKES FOR DRUG TOXICITY TO PRESENT ITSELF SOME TOXIC EFFECTS ARE APPARENT IMMEDIATELY; SOME ARE NOT APPARENT FOR WEEKS OR MONTHS
AN IMMUNOLOGIC REACTION THAT CAN BE EITHER MILD OR SEVERE IS: DRUG ALLERGY
THIS REACTION IS SEVERE AND USUALLY OCCURS IMMEDIATELY. IT CAN BE FATAL IF SYMPTOMS ARE NOT NOTICED IMMEDIATELY AND TREATMENT IS PROMPTLY OBTAINED ANAPHYLACTIC REACTION
WHAT ARE THE SUBJECTIVE EARLY SYMPTOMS OF ANAPHYLAXIS FEELING OF SWELLING IN THE MOUTH AND TONGUE, ACUTE SHORTNESS OF BREATH, ACUTE HYPOTENSION, AND TACHYCARDIA
THIS EXISTS IN A PERSON WHO HAS UNUSUALLY LOW PHYSIOLOGIC RESPONSE TO A DRUG AND WHO REQUIRES INCREASES IN THE DOSAGE TO MAINTAIN A GIVEN THERAPEUTIC EFFECT DRUG TOLERENCE
AN INCREASING RESPONSE TO REPEATED DOSES OF A DRUG THAT OCCURS WHEN THE RATE OF ADMINISTRATION EXCEEDS THE RATE OF METABOLISM OR EXCRETION CUMULATIVE EFFECT
OCCURS WHEN THE ADMINISTRATION OF ONE DRUG BEFORE, AT THE SAME TIME AS, OR AFTER ANOTHER DRUG ALTERS THE EFFECT OF ONE OR BOTH DRUGS DRUG INTERACTIONS
THE EFFECT OF ONE OR BOTH DRUGS MAY BE INCREASED. THIS IS CALLED POTENTIATING EFFECT
THE EFFECT OF ONE OR BOTH DRUGS MAY BE DECREASED. THIS IS CALLED INHIBITING EFFECT
MAY BE ADDITIVE OR SYNERGISTIC POTENTIATING EFFECTS
WHEN TWO OF THE SAME TYPES OF DRUG INCREASE THE ACTION OF EACH OTHER. IT IS KNOWN AS ADDITIVE
WHEN TWO DIFFERENT DRUGS INCREASE THE ACTION OF ONE OR ANOTHER DRUG. IT IS KNOWN AS SYNERGISTIC
