Ecosystems Lesson 1

Ecosystems

TermDefinition
Abiotic Factors The non-living things within an ecosystem. Examples: Sunlight, Water, Soil, Temperature
Biotic Factors The living things within an ecosystem. Plants, Animals, Humus of Soil, Bacteria, Fungi
Ecosystem An area made up of living and non-living things.
Population A group of organisms of the same species in the same area.
Community An area formed by different populations of living species.
Habitat A place where an organism lives that provides the resources it needs to survive; it may change depending on the time of day, time of year, weather factors, resources available, etc.
Organism An individual of any living species.
Biome A large area/ecosystem identified by its climate, plant, and animal life.
Biosphere The worldwide collection of all ecosystems.
