Gore's Light Vocab

Light Energy Terms and Definitions

TermDefinition
Light an electromagnetic wave that travels in waves and can be seen when it interacts with matter
Transmission movement of light through matter
Reflection light bouncing off of a surface
Refraction light being bent as it enters a different medium
Absorption the transfer of light energy (electromagnetic energy) to particles in matter
Transparent matter that transmits light easily (water, glass, air)
Translucent matter that transmits light, but scatters it (waxed paper, frosted glass)
Opaque matter that does not transmit light (construction paper, foil)
Angle of Incidence the initial angle a light ray strikes an object (=angle of reflection)
Angle of Reflection the resulting angle a light ray bouncing off an object (=angle of incidence)
