Processes of Adaptation
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Asphyxia | insufficient O2 & excess CO2 in the blood and tissues |
| Bilirubin | unusable component of hemolyzed erythrocytes |
| Brown fat (brown adipose tissue) | highly vascular specialized fat found in the NB that provides more heat than other fat when metabolized |
| Fetal lung fluid | fluid that fills fetal lungs in utero, expanding alveoli & promoting lung development |
| First period of reactivity | begins at birth when NB is alerty & active; ends when infant first falls asleep |
| Hyperbilirubinemia | excess bilirubin in blood |
| Jaundice | yellow discoloration of the skin and sclera caused by excess bilirubin |
| Neutral thermal environment | environment in which body temp is maintained without an increase in metabolism or oxygen rate |
| Nonshivering thermogenesis | process of heat production without shivering, by oxidation of brown fat |
| Polycythemia | abnormally high # of erythrocytes |
| Second period of reactivity | 4-6 hrs after first sleep postpartum when NB may have elevated pulse & RR, excess mucus |
| Surfactant | lipoproteins produced by lungs in mature fetus to reduce surface tension in the alveoli, promoting lung expansion after birth |
| Thermogenesis | heat production |
| Thermoregulation | maintenance of body temperature |
