| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| weathering | the processes that break down the rocks on Earth’s surface into smaller pieces. |
| erosion | the movement of loose rocks by wind, water, or ice. |
| abrasion | a type of physical weathering when rocks break into smaller pieces by rubbing and bumping into one another. |
| frost/ice wedging | the repeated freezing and thawing of water, causing cracks in rocks to expand. |
| physical weathering | the breakdown of rocks, without changing the chemical composition. |
| chemical weathering | the breakdown of rocks by chemical reactions. |
| deposition | the settling of eroded rocks, usually in a basin. |
| sediments | rock particles that are carried along by water or wind. |
| sedimentary rock | a type of rock formed by the compaction and cementation of sediments. |
| compaction | sediments being pushed closely together by pressure. |
| cementation | dissolved sediments sticking or gluing together, usually by heat or water. |
| Law of Superposition | a law which states that sediments are deposited horizontally, therefore older rock layers are on the bottom and newer rock layers are on the top. |
| fossil | the remains, trace, or imprint of an animal or plant life preserved on Earth’s crust. |
| body fossil | preserved parts of the organism, such as shells, bones, or teeth. |
| trace fossil | preserved evidence of the activities of organisms, such as footprints and tracks. |
