weathering the processes that break down the rocks on Earth’s surface into smaller pieces.
erosion the movement of loose rocks by wind, water, or ice.
abrasion a type of physical weathering when rocks break into smaller pieces by rubbing and bumping into one another.
frost/ice wedging the repeated freezing and thawing of water, causing cracks in rocks to expand.
physical weathering the breakdown of rocks, without changing the chemical composition.
chemical weathering the breakdown of rocks by chemical reactions.
deposition the settling of eroded rocks, usually in a basin.
sediments rock particles that are carried along by water or wind.
sedimentary rock a type of rock formed by the compaction and cementation of sediments.
compaction sediments being pushed closely together by pressure.
cementation dissolved sediments sticking or gluing together, usually by heat or water.
Law of Superposition a law which states that sediments are deposited horizontally, therefore older rock layers are on the bottom and newer rock layers are on the top.
fossil the remains, trace, or imprint of an animal or plant life preserved on Earth’s crust.
body fossil preserved parts of the organism, such as shells, bones, or teeth.
trace fossil preserved evidence of the activities of organisms, such as footprints and tracks.
