| chemical property | a property of matter that describes a substances ability to participate in chemical reactions |
| chemical change | a change that occurs when one or more substances change into an entirely new substances with different properties |
| states of matter | the physical forms of matter that include solid liquid and gas |
| solid | a state of matter in which volume and shape of a substance are fixed definite shape and definite volume |
| physical change | a change in matter from one form to another without a change in chemical properties |
| liquid | a state of matter that has a definite volume but not a definite shape |
| gas | a form of matter that does not have a definite shape or volume |
| melting | the change of state in which a solid becomes a liquid by ADDING energy |
| evaporation | the change of state in which a liquid becomes a gas |
| boiling | the conversion of a liquid to a vapor - it occurs when the pressure inside the bubble equals the pressure outside the bubble |
| condensation | the change of state from a gas to a liquid by REMOVING energy |
| freezing | the change of state from a liquid to a solid by REMOVING energy |
| sublimation | the process in which a solid changes directly into a gas |
| vaporization | occurs when the particles in a liquid gain enough energy to move independently |
| deposition | the process in which a gas changes directly into a solid |
