Vocab for classification and heredity

organism any living thing
animal classification 5 animal groups: fish, birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians
vertebrate an animal with a backbone
invertebrate an animal without a backbone
trait characteristic of an organism
heredity the process through which traits are passed from parents to offspring
inherited trait trait that is passed on from parents
learned behavior traits that are learned from the environment around them or are taught
instinct a way of knowing something without learning or thinking about it
physical trait what you can see on an organism
flowering plant a plant that produces flowers; an angiosperm
non-flowering plant a plant that does not ever produce flowers; a gymnosperm
seeds the unit of reproduction of a flowering plant
seedless no seeds, instead make spores (a spore is like a seed, but does not contain a complete new plant)
vascular having a tube like water transport system
nonvascular does not have a water transport system
