Verbs
| Term | Definition |

| Linking Verbs | a "be" verb that expresses the state of "being" or existing |
| action verb | a word that tells what the subject did in the sentence (When you have "to" before what looks like an action verb, that word is NOT) |
| main verb | a word that expresses action |
| helping verb | works with the main verb but is not an action verb |
| verb phrase | made up of one or more helping verbs and a main verb |
| principal parts | four basic forms of a verb |
| tense | tells when the action or state of being takes place |
| present tense | tells what is happening now |
| past tense | tells something that has already happened |
| future tense | tells what is going to happen before it does |
| perfect tense | verb tense made up of a form of "have" and the past particle |
| regular verb past tense | past tense words formed by adding "ed" |
| irregular verb past tense | past tense words formed by not adding "ed" (You must memorize them!) |
