Parts of a Story Arc - literary elements of a narrative

narrative | a spoken or written account of connected events; a story - a short story, a drama, a narrative poem, a novel |
exposition | the beginning part of the plot where the stage is set through the introduction of character and setting |
rising action | the series of struggles that create the main tension or conflict in a story |
conflict | the challenge main characters need to solve to achieve their goals |
climax | is the term used to refer to the part of story or play where the tension or action reaches its highest part. Sometimes it is a "crisis" point in the plot. |
plot | is a literary term used to describe the events that make up a story, or the main part of a story. These events relate to each other in a pattern or a sequence |
falling action | occurs right after the climax, when the main problem of the story resolves. It wraps up the narrative, resolves its loose ends, and leads toward the closure. |
resolution | is the part of the story's plot where the main problem is resolved or worked out. It occurs after the falling action and is typically where the story ends. |
trait | all the aspects of a person's behavior and attitudes - good and bad - that make up that person's personality |
theme | an author's intended message showing a concept or a statement about the character and outcome of a story |
figurative language | is when you use a word or phrase that does not have its normal everyday, literal meaning. A few different ways to use figurative language include metaphors, similes, personification and hyperbole. |
imagery | visually or figurative descriptive language that uses descriptive details and the five senses |
