| community | a group of interacting populations that live in the same area at the same time |
| limiting factor | any abiotic or biotic factor that restricts the numbers, reproduction, or distribution of organisms. For example: fire, climate |
| tolerance | ability of an organism to survive when subjected to abiotic or biotic factors |
| ecological succession | change in an ecosystem where one community replaces another |
| primary succession | the esablishment of a community in an area of exposed rock that does not have any topsoil |
| climax community | stable, mature community that results when there is little change in the composition of species |
| secondary succession | orderly and predictable change that takes place after a community of organisms has been removed but the soil has remained intact |
| weather | condition of the atmosphere at a specific place and time |
| biome | a large group of ecosystems that share the same climate and have similar types of plan communities |

| climate | average weather conditions in an area including temperature and precipitation |
| tundra | treeless biome with a layer of permafrost |

| tropical savanna | grasses and scattered trees in climates that receive less precipitation than some other tropical areas: Africa, S. America, & Australia |
| tropical seasonal forest | Africa, Asia, Australia, S. & Central America; similar to temperate deciduous forest since during the dry season, almost all trees drop their leaves |
| tropical rain forest | warm temperatures and large amounts of rain; most diverse of all biomes |
| sediment | material that is deposited by water, wind, or glaciers |
