| Cell | The basic unit of structure and function in a living thing. |
| Cell Membrane | Forms the outside boundary of the cell |
| Nucleus | The control center that directs the cell's activities and function. |
| Cytoplasm | The material within a cell apart from the nucleus that contains organelles. It is clear and jellylike. |
| Muscle Tissue | Allows the body to move. It can contract and shorten. |
| Nervous Tissue | Cells that enable you to think, hear and see. They control all movement. |
| Connective Tissue | Provides support for your body and it connects all parts. |
| Epithelial Tissue | Protects delicate structures that lie beneath. Example is skin. |
| Organ | Structure that is composed of different kinds of tissue. It performs a specific job and is more complex than a tissue. |
| Organ System | The body has 11 organ systems. |
| Homeostasis | The process by which an organism's internal environment is kept stable in spite of changes int he external environment. |
| Stress | The reaction of your body to potentially threatening, challenging or disturbing events. |

| cartilage | another type of connective tissue that is more flexible than bone |
| Compact Bone | The second layer of bone that is hard and dense but not solid. |
| Spogy bone | has many small spaces it is lightweight but strong |
| marrow | comes in two types red and yellow |
| Red Marrow | Produces most of the bodies blood cells |
| Yellow marrow | Stores fat that can be used as an energy reserve |
| osteoporosis | a condition in which the bodies bones become weak and break easily. |
| fracture | a break in a bone |
| dislocation | an injury in which a bone comes out of it's joint |
| sprain | an injury in which the ligament holding bones together are stretched too far and tear. |
| x-ray | a form of energy that travels in waves |
| magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) | a method for taking images of both the bones and soft tissues of the body |
| arthritis | a disease of the joints that makes movement painful |
| arthroscope | a slim tube-shaped, surgical instrument that doctors use to diagnose a problem in a joint. |

| voluntary muscle | a muscle that is under conscious control, mouth |
| skeletal muscle | a muscle that is attached to the bones of the skeleton and provide the force for movement |
| tendon | strong connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone |
| striated muscle | a muscle that appears banded;also called skeletal muscle |
| smooth muscle | involuntary muscle found inside many internal organs of the body |
| cardiac muscle | muscle tissue found only in the heart |
| epidermis | outer layer of skin |
| melanin | a pigment that gives skin its color |
| dermis | inner layer of skin |
| pore | an opening through which sweat reaches the surface of the skin |
| follicle | structure in the dermis of the skin from which a strand of hair grows. |
| cancer | a disease in which some body cells divide uncontrollably. |
