| Term | Definition |

| Debate | The process of arguing the affirmative or negative side of a topic against an opposing team, often including a judge or audience or who decides the outcome. |
| Introduction | should include a statement of team's purpose and point of view on the topic |
| Chairperson | introduces the debate, by reminding the audience of the debating rules, introducing the topic, the affirmation team and negative team speakers |
| Affirmation/Proposition | Argues in favor of the topic |
| Rebuttal | counter augment that points out flaws in other side's claims |
| Argument | Using evidence and reasoning to support claims |
| Refute | to prove a statement to be wrong |
| Fallacy | Bad or false reasoning that results in an unstable argument. |
| Claim - Premise | Controversial statement that a debater supports or opposes with evidence and reasoning |
| Evidence | Information used to support a claim |
| Defend | attempt to justify and speak in favor of topic |
| Negative/Opposition | Argues against the topic |
