Cell Division
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Cell Cycle | The process of a cell growing, preparing to divide, and dividing into two new daughter cells. |
Interphase | The first stage of the cell cycle; the cell grows, copies DNA, and prepares to divide. |
Mitosis | The second stage of the cell cycle; where the nucleus actually divides, it has for phases (PMAT). |
Cytokinesis | The third stage of the cell cycle; where the cytoplasm is divided into two new daughter cells. |
Replication | The process that occurs during interphase where DNA is copied. |
Chromosome | This X shaped structure forms during interphase, once the chromatin condenses. |
Chromatids | These structures are the two halves that make up a chromosome. They are identical copies of DNA. |
Prophase | This is the first phase of mitosis; chromosomes condense, centrioles move to the poles, and spindle fibers form. |
Metaphase | This is the second phase of mitosis; the chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell. |
Anaphase | This is the third phase of mitosis; chromatids are pulled away from each other. |
Telophase | This is the fourth phase of mitosis; it is often combined with cytokinesis, the cell is basically split. |
Meiosis | The process that creates sex cells. |
Gamete | Another name for a sex cell. |
