niche the role of a species in an ecosystem
population all of the members of one species that live in the same area
community all of the populations living together in one area
herbivore a plant eating animal
carnivore a meat eating animal
omnivore an animal who eats meat and plants
predator an animal who hunts other animals for food
prey an animal that is hunted and killed by another animal for food
photosynthesis the process by which plants use sunlight to make sugar from water and carbon dioxide
food chain the path of matter and energy in a community
food web a combination of all of the food chains in a community
energy pyramid a diagram that compares the amount of energy at each level, in order
scavenger an animal that feeds on dead plants, animals or other materials
energy flow the flow of energy from one organism to another in a food web
ecology the study of the relationships among living and nonliving parts of an area
