| consumer | an organism that consumes other organisms for food |
| ecosystem | all of the living and nonliving parts of an area |
| habitat | the place where a species lives |
| niche | the role of a species in an ecosystem |
| population | all of the members of one species that live in the same area |
| community | all of the populations living together in one area |
| herbivore | a plant eating animal |
| carnivore | a meat eating animal |
| omnivore | an animal who eats meat and plants |
| predator | an animal who hunts other animals for food |
| prey | an animal that is hunted and killed by another animal for food |
| photosynthesis | the process by which plants use sunlight to make sugar from water and carbon dioxide |
| food chain | the path of matter and energy in a community |
| food web | a combination of all of the food chains in a community |
| energy pyramid | a diagram that compares the amount of energy at each level, in order |
| scavenger | an animal that feeds on dead plants, animals or other materials |
| energy flow | the flow of energy from one organism to another in a food web |
| ecology | the study of the relationships among living and nonliving parts of an area |
