Scientific Method

TermDefinition
Science The study of phenomena through observations and experiments.
Observation Information you collect with your senses or with scientific tools.
Inference A conclusion reached based on evidence and reasoning.
Hypothesis A predicted or proposed outcome of an experiment based on evidence. An if, then statement.
Controlled Experiment An experiment in which only one variable is changed and all other variables remain unchanged in order to achieve valid results.
Control Group The group in an experiment in which none of the variables or factors have been changed.
Independent Variable The one variable that is changed and tested in an experiment.
Dependent Variable The outcome or data obtained in an experiment that depends on the independent variable.
Data The information you collect when performing an experiment. Can be numbers or qualitative information (can be observed with your senses)
Valid Conclusion A conclusion based on fact or logic.
Experimental Group The group in an an experiment in which one variable (the independent variable has been changed).
X-axis The horizontal axis on a graph on which the independent variable is shown.
Y-axis The vertical axis on which the data from the dependent variable (outcome) is shown
