What is Life?

| Cell | the basic unit of structure and function in an organism |
| Unicellular | a single celled organism |
| Multicellular | having many cells |
| Metabolism | combination of chemical reactions when an organism builds up or breaks down |
| Stimulus | a change that causes an organism to react |
| Response | action in behavior in result of a stimulus |
| Development | the change that occurs during a lifetime, producing a more complex organism |
| Asexual Reproduction | involves only one parent and produces offspring identical to the parent |
| Sexual Reproduction | involves two parents and produces offspring that differs from both parents |
| Spontaneous Generation | a mistake idea that living things come from nonliving sources |
| Controlled Experiment | an experiment where one variable is controlled at a time |
| Autotroph | an organism that is able to capture sunlight or chemicals to make its own food |
| Hetrotroph | an organism that can't make its own food but gets food by consuming other living things |
| Homeostasis | a condition where an organism's inside environment is kept stable in spite of changes to the outside |
| Organism | a living thing |
