weather to compass

This stack covers the vocabulary for the first quiz.

TermDefinition
weather The changing conditions of the atmosphere at a given time and place
thermometer Used to measure the temperature
barometer Used to measure air pressure
hygrometer Used to measure humidity
anemometer Used to measure wind speed
compass Used to determine wind direction
humidity The amount of water vapor in the air
compress/contract Forcing molecules to take up less space
expand Molecules taking up more space and spreading out
mass The amount of matter in an object
weight The amount of gravity on an object
Exosphere last layer; satellites
Thermosphere hottest; thickest; contains the ionosphere
Mesosphere middle layer; contains shooting stars
Stratosphere above Troposphere; contains the ozone layer
Troposphere thinnest; weather; where we live
solstice longest/shortest day; summer/winter; June & Dec 21
equinox equal hours of day and night; fall and spring; Sept & March 21
perihelion when Earth is closest to the Sun; shortest distance to Sun
aphelion when Earth is farthest away from the Sun; longest distance to Sun
direct light the Sun strikes the Earth at a 90 degree angle; smaller area; intense; warmer
indirect light the Sun strikes the Earth at an angle less than 90 degrees; larger area; dimmer; cooler
kinetic energy energy of motion or movement
heat the amount of kinetic molecular motion in an object
temperature the measure of the amount of molecular energy in an object
radiation heat energy that transfers through the air in waves or rays
conduction heat energy that transfers when objects touch
convection transfer of heat in fluids because of differences in density due to temperature differences
density the amount of matter in a volume of material; D=M/V
convection cell an individual cycle of heating, rising, cooling, and sinking
water vapor the gas state of water
evaporation a liquid becoming a gas; heat is needed
condensation a gas becoming a liquid; cold surface is needed
saturated full; cannot hold any more
relative humidity amount of water vapor you have compared to the amount needed to saturate the air at a given temperature
transpiration water moving in plants from roots to leaves
dew point temperature at which condensation occurs
condensation nuclei small particles on which water vapor condenses
precipitation any form of water falling from clouds
wind movement of air from areas of high to areas of low pressure
sea breeze from sea to land; land is warmer than water; day
land breeze from land to sea; water is warmer than land; night
differential heating different Earth materials heat at different rates

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
