Essential vocabulary for science
| Term | Definition |

| Physical Science | Study of inanimate natural objects including chemistry, physics, and astronomy |
| Chemistry | Scientific study of the structure, properties, and reactions of the chemical elements and the compounds they form |
| Physics | Scientific study of the nature and properties of energy including heat, light, and mechanics |
| Theory | Explanation of some aspect of the natural world that can be repeatedly tested |
| Law | Statement based on repeated experimental observations that consistently prove to be true and are accepted by the scientific community |
| Observation | The data collected using the five senses to learn about objects or events |
| Inference | A logical explanation or conclusion based on observations and/or facts |
| Measure | To compare the characteristics of something with a standard |
| Scientific Method | Systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses |
| Hypothesis | Educated guess based upon evidence and used as a starting point for investigation |
| Independent Variable | The variable that is changed or directed by the scientist |
| Dependent Variable | Variable being tested or measured |
| Control | Aspects of the experiment that remain unchanged in order to measure the dependent variable |
| Experiment | A test using observations and controlled variables to discover answers to questions and/or check a hypothesis |
| Data | Facts and statistics collected for reference or analysis |
| Qualitative | Measured by appearance, color, shape, or anything OTHER than numbers |
| Quantitative | Measured by numbers |
