Finding Locations on Earth (Latitude & Longitude)
| Term | Definition |

| axis | imaginary straight line running through the Earth from pole to pole |
| equator | a circle halfway between the north and south poles, which divides the northern and southern hemispheres (0 degrees latitude) |
| prime meridian | imaginary line running through Greenwich, England, which divides the western and eastern hemispheres (0 degrees longitude) |
| latitude | angular distance north or south of and parallel to the equator (also called parallels) |
| longitude | angular distance west or east of the prime meridian with all lines intersecting at the poles |
| international date line | line running north to south in the Pacific Ocean where the date changes from one day to the next (180 degrees longitude) |
| great circle | any circle that divides the globe in half; used by long distance aircraft for travel |
| true north | the direction of the geographic north pole |
| geomagnetic poles | point on the Earth's surface above a pole of the Earth's internal magnet |
| magnetic declination | angle between the direction of the Earth's geographic pole and the direction in which a compass needle points |
