Animal Gas Exchange

QuestionAnswer
Gill A thin membranous projection of some part of the body surface of aquatic organisms, which contains many blood vessels and is specialized for exchange (and in some organisms is used for salt excretion or absorption)
Parapodium A flattened extension on each side of a polychaete annelid worm which is used in locomotion and gas exchange.
Gill Arch Tissue such as cartilage separating and supporting the gills.
Gill filaments Parts of a fish gill which are pairs of finger-like extensions from the gill arch.
Gill Lamellae Thin membranous flattened extensions of gill filaments containing many capillaries and functioning as the gas exchange surface.
Lung A spongy or thin membranous sac in the body of animals, which contains many blood vessels and is specialized for gas exchange (found in reptiles birds, mammals as well as some fishes, amphibians, snails and slugs)
Trachea (1) the "wind pipe" or tube of vertebrates which leads from the pharynx to the bronchi (2) a tracheal tube in the tracheal system of arthropods.
Bronchus One of the two tubes which joins the trachea to the lungs in vertebrates.
Tracheal System The branched network of tubules in insects, centipedes and millipedes through which gas exchange occurs.
Spiracle An opening into the tracheal system.
Tracheoles The smallest of the tracheal tubes in a tracheal system.
