What is the name given to the ends of the bone? epiphysis
What do you call the region of a bone between the diaphysis and epiphysis, where new bone cells make the bone longer? metaphysis
Which two minerals are stored in the bones and can be released into the bloodstream if needed by the body? calcium and phosphorus
What is made in the process of hemopoesis? new blood cells
Where do you find red bone marrow? Generally, in the long bones of adults (int infants)
What is yellow bone marrow made of? adipose tissue, this tissue can be converted to triglycerides and used by the body
What is the function of the curve of a bone? to give it strength
What is an articulation? where 2 bones meet at a joint
What is the function of articular cartilage? absorb shock and reduce friction between bones
What is the function of the spongy bone? it contains the red bone marrow
What important thing happens at the epiphyseal plate? New bone cells are added, making the bone longer.
What will eventually happen to the epiphyseal plate? When growth stops, the plate will convert to bone cells and become the epiphyseal line
What three things are made by the red bone marrow? (important) red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets
What forms in the endosteum? New cells that add width to the bone
What forms in the periosteum? New cells that add width to the bone
What substance is stored in the medullary cavity? yellow bone marrow
