Year 9 Science Matter, Mixing & Separating Key Words
Term | Definition |
---|---|
condensing | Changing from a gas into a liquid. |
conduction | When heat is transferred through a substance by passing from one particle to the next. |
contraction | When a substance takes up less space, because its particles have moved closer together. This happens when a substance is cooled. |
convection | When heat is transferred by the movement of a heated (less dense) liquid or gas up through a more dense liquid or gas. This causes currents which transfer heat energy through the substance. |
density | How tightly packed together the particles are in a substance. |
diffusion | When particles in a liquid or gas move from where they have a high concentration to where they have a low concentration |
evaporating | Changing from a liquid into a gas. |
expansion | When a substance takes up more space, because its particles have moved further apart. This happens when a substance is heated. |
gas | A type of matter in which the particles are far apart. It will fill (or escape) its container. |
liquid | A type of matter in which the particles can slide past each other. It can be poured and will take the shape of the bottom of its container. |
matter | A substance that occupies space and has mass. |
melting | Changing from a solid into a liquid. |
particles | The very small parts which make up a substance. The movement of these parts and distance between them is what makes the substance a solid, liquid or gas. |
solid | A type of matter in which the particles are packed tightly together. It cannot be poured, and does not take on the shape of its container. |
solidifying | Changing from a liquid into a solid. |
sublimation | Changing directly from a solid into a gas. |
