preschooler height steady increase of 2.5 to 3.5 inches a year. elongation of legs rather than trunk. they are slender but sturdy, graceful, agile and posturally correct.
3yo gross and fine motor can ride a tricycle, walk on tiptoe, balance on one foot for a few seconds, broad jumps, tower of 9-10 blocks,
4yo gross and fine motor skip and hop on 1 foot, catch a ball, throws ball, alternates feet walking down stairs, uses scissors
5yo gross and fine motor skip in alternate feet, jump rope, skate, swim, uses simple tools
erikson's stage 3 initiative vs. guilt. energetic learning. believe that wishes make events occur causing guilt if something bad happens.
preoperational phase (piaget) 2 to 7yo. 2 stages: preconceptual (2-4yo), and phase of intuitive thought (4-7yo). shift from totally egocentric thought to social awareness and the ability to consider other view points.
magical thinking preschoolers belief that thoughts are all powerful. believe in the power of words and take their meaning literally.
naive instrumental orientation actions are directed toward satisfying their needs, and less frequently the needs of others.
preschooler body image *recognize differences in skin color and racial identity and are vulnerable to learning prejudices *5yo compare their size to others and can become conscious of being too big or little *fear if skin is broken insides will leak out
preschooler language telegraphic, many questions and use of plurals, correct pronouns, and past tense verbs. 4-5 word sentences
preschooler play associative--play in groups with similar or identical activities but without rigid organization or rules. Imitative, imaginative and dramatic. Imaginary friends can help with loneliness, but child should not use to avoid punishment.
sex education 1. find out what children think and know 2. then answer question with correct info and help children to understand why their explanation is inaccurate. Be Honest.
animism ascribing lifelike qualities to inanimate objects
hyperaggressive behavior in preschoolers characterized by unprovoked physical attacks on children and adults, destruction of other's property, frequent intense temper tantrums, extreme impulsivity, disrespect, and noncompliance.
frustration continual thwarting of self-satisfaction by disapproval, humiliation, punishment, or insults can lead children to act out at others. Children who are well-behaved at home, but have discipline problems at school or are bullied.
normal and problematic behavior defined by 1. quantity 2. severity 3. distribution (different manifestations) 4. onset (when behavior started) 5. duration (at least 4 weeks)
dyslalia articulation problems--can develop from pressuring children to produce sounds ahead of their developmental level. an also revert to infantile speech.
preschool nutrition 90 kcal/kg. 1000 to 1800 calories. Fluid intake is 100ml/kg/day.
preschooler sleep 12 hours a night and infrequently takes naps.
