erikson's stage 3 initiative vs. guilt. energetic learning. believe that wishes make events occur causing guilt if something bad happens.
preoperational phase (piaget) 2 to 7yo. 2 stages: preconceptual (2-4yo), and phase of intuitive thought (4-7yo). shift from totally egocentric thought to social awareness and the ability to consider other view points.
magical thinking preschoolers belief that thoughts are all powerful. believe in the power of words and take their meaning literally.

preschooler play associative--play in groups with similar or identical activities but without rigid organization or rules. Imitative, imaginative and dramatic. Imaginary friends can help with loneliness, but child should not use to avoid punishment.
