What is a qualitative observation? When one/all of your five senses are used to describe something
What is a quantitative observation? When a measurement or number is used to describe something
What is a biotic factor? Something that is living, used to be living, or was produced by something living
What is an abiotic factor Something that's nonliving
What is an individual? A single organism
What is an organism? Any living thing
What is a population? Many individuals of the same species or type in the same place
What is a community? All of the different populations in a given area at a given time
What is an ecosystem? A system of interacting biotic and abiotic factors
What is an environment? Everything around an organism that affects it
What is a habitat? The place that supplies all of an organism's needs
What does aquatic mean? Water
What does terrestrial mean? Land
What is a feeding relationship? When one organism eats another organism
What is a food chain? A single path of predator and prey feeding relationship
What is a predator? An organism that eats another
What is prey? An organism that gets eaten by another
What is a food web? All of the feeding relationships and food chains in an ecosystem
What is a producer? An organism that makes its own food through photosynthesis
What is photosynthesis? The process by which the energy from the sun(light) can create food energy (sugar) from water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2)
What is a consumer? An organism that cannot produce its own food and must get food by eating another organism
What is a decomposer? An organism that cannot produce its own food and gets its energy from the dead remains of organisms
What is a first level consumer(primary consumer)? Also known as an herbivore, an organism that eats producers (plants)
What is a second-level consumer (secondary consumer)? Also known as a carnivore, an organism that eats first level consumers
What is a third level consumer (tertiary consumer)? Also known as a carnivore, an organism that eats second level consumers
What are trophic levels? This refers to what part of a food chain an organism is at (ex: producer, first level consumer, second level consumer, etc)
What is a calorie? A calorie is a measure of energy in food. 1 calorie is the amount of energy in food that, if converted to heat (by burning) would raise the temperature of 1 mL of water by 1 degree Celsius.
What is a carnivore? An animal that eats meat (other animals)
What is an herbivore? An animal that eats plants (producers)
What is an omivore? An animal that eats plants and animals
