| producers | organisms that make their own food using the energy in sunlight (green plants, grasses, trees) |
| consumers | organisms who cannot make their own food |
| decomposers | organisms that break down wastes and the remains of other organisms into simpler substances (worms, bacteria, fungi) |
| herbivores | consumers that eats only producers (porcupines, rabbits, deer) |
| omnivores | consumers that eat producers and consumers (opossums, raccoons, bears) |
| carnivores | animals that eat herbivores and omnivores (ospreys, cats, tigers, lines, sharks) |
| food chain | the path that energy takes from one organism to another in the form of food |
| food web | the food chains that overlap in an ecosystem, shows how all the food chains in an ecosystem are connected |
| predator | carnivore that hunts for food |
| prey | organisms that are hunted by predators |
| competition | the struggle among living things for food, water, or other resources |
| energy pyramid | a diagram that shows the amount of energy available at each level of a food web in an ecosystem |
