Trigeminal Number:V Function:Mixed Activity: Opthalmic branch: sensory impulses from scalp, upper eyelid, nose, cornea, and lacrimal gland. Maxillary branch - sensory impulses from lower eye lid, nasal cavity, upper teeth, upper lip, alate.
Abducens Number:VI Function:Mixed Activity: Extrinsic movement of eye.
Facial Number:VII Function:Mixed Activity: Taste (anterior two-thirds of tongue). Facial movements such as smiling, closing of eyes, frowning. Production of tears and salivary stimulation.
Acustic/Vestibulocochlear Number:VIII Function:Sensory Action: Vestibular Branch: sense of balance or equilibrium. Cochlear branch: sense of hearing.
Glossopharyngeal Number:IX Function:Mixed Activity:produces the gag and swallowing reflex. Taste (posterior portion of the tongue.)
Vagus Number:X Function:Mixed Activity: Innervates muscles of throat and mouth for swallowing and talking.
Accessory Number:XI Function:Motor Activity:Movement of trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles. Some movement of larynx, pharynx, and soft palate.
Hypoglossal Number:XII Function:Motor Activity: Movement of tongue for swallowing, movement of food during chewing, and speech.
