Dynamic Earth

TermDefinition
tectonic plate huge slabs of rock floating on top of the mantle and when they make contact by shearing, compression and tension, they cause earthquakes and tsunamis
tremor mini earthquakes and ripples that happen after the main earthquake the point of earth
epicentre the part of earth above the point where the earthquake originates
hyposphere the place below the epicentre where the earthquake starts
core the centre of the earth the earth is the core which is melted rock because of its extreme heat
crust the layer of earth on which humans and life live on and is made out of huge slabs of rock called tectonic plates which float on the mantle
mantle the second layer of the earth is the mantle
liquifaction when all the water in the ground gets pushed up to the surface and can cause objects like cars and buildings to half sink into the ground
fault line the fault line runs along the tectonic plates and earthquakes and volcanoes happen when the tectonic plates shift against each others fault line
Primary Waves
Secondary Waves
Surface Waves
seismograph
Richter Scale a scale which measures an earthquakes energy and force
molten
Mercalli Scale a scale which measures an earthquakes damage destruction
Primary effects
Secondary effects
compression when two tectonic plates push together and make the ground rise and form hills, mountains and velleys
tension when two tectonic plates pull apart from each other and can cause huge cracks in the ground and sometimes ground can rise
shearing when two tectonic plates shift along each other e.g. one moves this way, the other moves that way
magma lava before it comes out and is still in the volcano

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
