| tectonic plates | Big slabs of rock that float on the mantle. |
| tremor | A smaller earthquake. |
| epicentre | A spot that is above the centre of an earthquake. |
| hypocentre | It is the point where a earthquake starts.Also known as the focus. |
| core | The centre of the earth. |
| crust | The outside of the earth.It floats above the mantle. |
| mantle | A area between the crust and the core. |
| primary waves | The fastest wave of a seismic wave.Can travel through solids,liquids and gases.It makes the rock change in volume when traveled through. |
| secondary waves | The second fastest wave of a seismic wave.Can only travel through solids.When traveling through rock,the rock changes shape. |
| surface waves | Seismic waves that travel along the surface. |
| liquefaction | When saturated soil is disturbed in a way,mostly earthquakes which makes the soil sink and water comes out of the ground. |
| siesmograph | A device that measures the magnitude of an earthquake. |
| richter scale | A way of measuring earthquakes by strength. |
| mercalli scale | A way of measuring earthquakes by damage done to buildings. |
| molten | Melted into something. |
| compression | Plates pushed together |
| tension | Plates pulling away |
| shearing | Plates sliding past |
| primary effects | caused by the earthquake |
| secondary effects | a result of the primary effect |
| stratovolcano | a volcano with layers of lava and ash |
| landforms | natural structures from the earth |
