Earth & Space Final

Essential Questions

QuestionAnswer
How do telescopes function? Telescopes collect/capture invisible and visible light (electromagnetic radiation) to magnify distant objects. Scientists then analyze these magnified images using the frequencies and wavelengths captured.
How do satellites function? Communication antennae, radio receivers and transmitters enable the satellite to communicate with one or more ground/Earth stations, called command centers.
Why are telescopes important to society? Telescopes allow us to observe things in space without having to go there.
Why are satellites important to society? Satellites collect data that aids society in things like communication, navigation, and analyzing environmental and atmospheric features.
Why are rockets important to society? Rockets provide society a transportation link to places beyond Earth that allow us to research/study features on our planet and beyond.
Why does the sun experience solar storms? Solar storms are caused by the sun's differential rotation. This allows heat and energy to build over time. Every 8-12 years heat and energy release and cooler regions develop (sun spots). The sun begin to warm these regions which causes massive storms.
Why does the Earth experience day and night? Rotation and Tilt. The Earth takes about 24 hours to spin in and out of sunlight. Earth is titled at 23.5 degrees which determines the length of day and night in a particular region.
Why does the Earth experience seasons? Orbit and Tilt. Earth revolves around the sun in 365 days. Earth's tilt affects the amount of sunlight. The specific season is determined by which hemisphere is titled toward/away from the sun.
Why does the Earth experience eclipses? When the new moon comes between the sun and Earth, it casts a shadow on the Earth, causing a SOLAR ECLIPSE. When Earth blocks sunlight from reaching the full moon, it casts a shadow on it causing a LUNAR ECLIPSE.
Why did the climate change before humans? changes to the Earth's tilt and orbit; astronomy events; volcanic eruptions; plate tectonics; changes in ocean currents
What has contributed to climate change since humans? pollution, expansion of cities (deforestation), changes in land use
Why is the geology in the Western US different from the Eastern US? Western US has much more extreme geology, including greater elevation changes and volcanoes, because this region is along a plate boundary where stress builds up and is released more often.
Why do earthquakes occur? They occur along plate boundaries and associated active faults where stress is released. Energy/seismic waves get released at the focus and travel outward in every direction. Waves first reach the surface at the epicenter.
Why do earthquakes occur in certain areas of the world? Earthquakes normally occur along the global plate boundaries where plates interact with one another and stress builds up and gets released.
Why do volcanoes occur in certain areas of the world? Volcanoes occur when ocean plates converge with another ocean plate or continental plate. Subduction occurs with the denser oceanic plate and it melts in the asthenosphere. This melted material then works it way up the less dense plate to form a volcano.
