| high tide | when a tide is at its highest level |
| low tide | when a tide is at its lowest level |
| spring tides | Earth, Moon, Sun in a line; full and new moon |
| neap tides | Earth, Moon, Sun in a right angle; first and last quarter moon |
| phases of the moon | cycling of shadows imposed on the moon by the Earth |
| first quarter | "half" of the moon appears on the right |
| last/third quarter | "half" of the moon appears on the left |
| waxing | moving to full; seeing more of the moon; on the right |
| waning | moving to new; seeing less of the moon; on the left |
| gibbous | more than half |
| crescent | less than half; sliver |
