Science Weather Foss

Test on Friday May 11

QuestionAnswer
What is the difference between weather and climate? Weather is the condition of the atmosphere at a given time in a given place. It is what we get. Climate is the average weather at a given place over a long period of time. It is what we expect.
What is a boundary between air masses with different temperatures? Front
How do clouds form? Moist air rises. Air cools until it reaches the dew point. Water vapor condenses on condensation nuclei.
After a hot shower, you notice that there is water on the mirror. How does the water get from the shower to the mirror? Water vapor entered the air. When the warm, moist air came in contact with the cool mirror surface, the temperature of the air decreased and the water condensed onto the surface of the mirror.
What gases in the atmosphere contribute to climate change? Greenhouse gases
What evidence do scientists have that our climate is warming? If more carbon dioxide is in the atmosphere, temperatures are hotter. In the last 100 years or so, the amount of carbon dioxide has skyrocketed and the climate has been warning.
Which of the following would be most helpful for you to predict next month’s weather for your city: current temperature, last year’s data for your city, the location of a weather front, the type of surface (sand, pavement, grass, etc.)? Last year’s data for your city.
On a weather map, where would you most likely find precipitation: where isobars are close together, in front of a cold front, close to an ocean, near a high or low pressure area? In front of a cold front
On a weather map, where would it most likely be the windiest: where isobars are close together, in front of a cold front, close to an ocean, near a high or low pressure area? Where isobars are close together
Describe a water particle’s trip through the “classic” water cycle. Solar energy heats water. Water evaporates and condenses to form clouds. Water falls back to Earth as precipitation. The water flows downhill into larger bodies of water. The cycle continues.
True or False: Water evaporates when it reaches the dew point. False. Water condenses when it reaches the dew point (Think the POINT at which DEW forms).
True or False: There is more fresh water on Earth than salt water. False. About 97% of Earth’s water is salt water and 3% is freshwater.
True or False: Washington D.C. has a warmer climate than Boston, Massachusetts because it is closer to the equator. True, areas closer to the equator tend to have warmer climates than those farther away.
True or False: A city west of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range would have a wetter climate compared to a city east of the mountain range. True, mountain ranges cause precipitation on the ocean side of the mountain and dry conditions on the other side. (Google “rain shadow” to see a diagram of this).
True or False: Aspen, Colorado has a warmer climate than St. Louis, Missouri. False. Aspen would have a colder climate because it is higher in elevation.
True or False. San Francisco, California and Modesto, California have a similar latitude and elevation, but San Francisco is closer to the ocean. San Francisco has more precipitation and less temperature variation than Modesto. True. Cities closer to the ocean tend to have more precipitation and less temperature variation throughout the year.
