Earthquakes Scott

Earthquakes and Earth's interior

QuestionAnswer
What two things increase the deeper you go into the Earth? Temperature & Pressure
What shows up that Earth's interior is NOT the same all the way through? Earthquakes
What offers clues that Earth's inside is hot? Volcanic Eruptions
The outer crust is the BLANK and least BLANK of all layers. What are the blanks? Coolest and & least dense
In the outer crust, there are two types, what are they? Oceanic and Continental
Define Oceanic crust Crust that lies beneath the ocean, ranging from 3 to 6 miles thick
Define Continental crust Crust that contains mostly land, ranging from 9 to 43 miles thick
What is the layer under the crust and what is it made of? The mantle; made of rock that is more dense and thick than crust
What percentage does the mantle make up of the Earth's interior? 83%
The top part is BLANK than the lower part of the mantle. Fill in the blank Rigid
The top part of the mantle with part of the crust is called the lithosphere, which is broken into pieces called plates
Where do the plates move? Over the lower part of the mantle right below it, which is called the asthenosphere
The inner most layer is the BLANK. What are the two layers in it? Core; outer core and inner core
What are each layer of the core made of? The liquid-outer core is made of iron. Solid-inner core is made of iron and nickel
The plates in the lithosphere do what on top of the asthenosphere? grind, collide, move past one another, and break and spread apart
Define plate boundary the place where edges of plates meet
When plates collide at boundaries, what can form? mountains and trenches
When the boundaries slide they build up BLANK in the rock and it BLANK and BLANK. energy; twists and compresses
When boundaries slide but build up too much energy, what will happen to the rock and what will it cause? the rock breaks causing an earthquake
Which plate is more dense, continental or oceanic? Oceanic
Which plate is more thick, continental or oceanic? Continental
What are the three types of boundaries? Convergent, divergent, and transform
The edges crumbles and form mountains when which type of plates collide at a convergent boundary? Continental
Define subduction The process by which one plate of the lithosphere sinks and slides under another
The bending of an oceanic plate creates a what? A trench, or a deep valley at the plate boundary
How does a volcano forms? As the plates sink deeper, more heat and pressure can form releasing water and causing melting to occur. As the melting earth rises, this causes a volcano to form.
How is an oceanic ridge formed? As rock cools, new oceanic crust forms and the mantle pushes more rock through
Divergent boundaries can form in a BLANK continental plate Thin
How is a rift valley formed? The rising mantle causes a rock between two continental plates. Melted rock goes in the open spaces.
Can a transform boundary cause earthquakes? Yes
What is a transform boundary? When a plate fractures allowing two plates to past one another without creating any new crust
Spreading ridges form when hot rock is BLANK under a plate causing the surface to do what? Flowing; thin and break
