Heat Transfer
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| thermal energy | Energy in the form of heat. |
| heat transfer | The movement of heat from one place to another |
| equilibrium | a state in which opposing forces or influences are balanced. |
| conduction | the transfer of heat energy within an object, or between objects that are directly touching each other |
| convection | the transfer of heat through a fluid or a gas |
| radiation | the transfer of energy between two objects that are not touching; transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves. This form of heat transfer does not require matter or a medium to transfer energy. |
| thermal insulator | something that prevents heat from moving from one place to another |
| thermal conductor | a material that allows energy in the form of heat, to be transferred within the material, without any movement of the material itself. |
| electrical conductor | allow electric current to flow easily because of the makeup of their atoms. |
| electrical insulator | opposes the flow of electricity; their electrical charge does not flow freely. Electrical insulators are important to keep us safe from electricity. |
