Unit 9 - Outer Space
review for Unit 9
Term | Definition |
---|---|
celestial bodies | any natural body floating in the atmosphere, such as planets, comets and asteroids |
atmosphere | mixture of gases surrounding a planet |
gravitational pull | the pull between objects due to gravity |
solar system | a central star and the planets, and other celestial bodies that orbit it |
Goldilocks Principle | a planet must neither be too far away from, or too close to a galactic center to support life |
sun | center of the solar system - plants change radiant energy from the sun into food that animals need for energy |
accommodation | an adaptation or adjustment that allows something to occur |
space suit | a garment worn to keep a human alive in the harsh environment of outer space |
microgravity | the condition in which people or objects appear to be weightless |
earth | the perfect HABITABLE planet to live on |
ozone layer | chemicals in the air create holes in this layer allowing exposure to ultraviolet radiation |
habitable zone | suitable or good enough to live in |
ultraviolet radiation | invisible rays from the sun can burn the skin causing cancer |
International Space Station | a habitable artificial satellite that orbits earth where astronauts live and conduct experiments |
greenhouse gasses | gasses that act as a barrier to heat leaving the atmosphere - keeps our atmosphere warm enough to live on Earth |
tidally locked | one side of the planet always faces the sun |
star | an exploding ball of burning gas held together by gravity |
Milky Way Galaxy | large spiral system consisting of several hundred billion stars, one of which is the Sun, and the solar system we live in |
giant planet | primarily composed of helium and/orhydrogen, rather than rock, or other solid matter, also called Jovian planets |
lunar eclipse | occurs when the moon moves into the Earth's shadow, causing the moon to be darkened |
revolve | to move in a circle on a central axis |
planet | a celestial body moving in an elliptical orbit around the sun |
revolution | a planet's motion around the sun along its orbit (the movement of a planet around the sun) |
constellation | a group of stars that appears to form a pattern or picture |
orbit | the curved path of a celestial object around or spacecraft around a star, planet, or moon |
universe | all of space and time and their contents, including planets, stars, galaxies, and all other forms of matter and energy |
dwarf planet | a celestial object similar to a planet but much smaller, that orbits the sun |
meteorite | a rock that falls to Earth from space |
asteroid | small, rocky objects that orbit the sun |
elipse | an orbit that is an oval-shaped path, like a slightly elongated circle |
light year | the distance light travels in one Earth year- One light-year is about 6 trillion miles (9 trillion km) |
