What are fossils? preserved remains or traces of living things
What is sedimentary rock? rock made from hardened sediment
What is a mold? a hollow area of sediment in the shape of an organism or part of an organism
What is a cast? a solid copy of the shape of an organism
What are petrified fossils? when minerals replace some or all of an organism in a fossil
What is carbon film? a very thin carbon coating on a rock
What is a trace fossil? a fossil that provides evidence of the activities of ancient organisms
What is a paleontologist? a scientist who studies fossils
What is a scientific theory? a well-tested concept that explains a wide range of observations
What is evolution? the gradual change in living things over long periods of time
What does it mean if an organism is extinct? when an organism no longer exists and will never again live on Earth
What is a rock's relative age? a rock is its age compared to the ages of other rocks
What is a rock's relative age? the number of years since a rock formed
What is the Law of Superposition? the geologic principle that states that in horizontal layers of sedimentary rock, each layer is older than the layer above it and younger than the layer below it
What is extrusion? lava that hardens on the surface
What is intrusion? an igneous rock layer that forms when it hardens under the surface
What is a fault? A break in the Earth's surface
What is an unconformity? the surface where new rock layers meet a much older rock surface beneath them
What is an index fossil? fossils of widely distributed organisms that lived during only one short period
What are periods? one of the units of geologic time into which geologists divide eras
What is an era? one of the three long units of geologic time between the Precambrian and the present
What was the Cenozoic era? when mammals became common
What was the Mesozoic era? age of reptiles
What was the Paleozoic era? the earliest era
What is continental drift? the movement of the Earth's surface because of forces inside Earth
What was Pangaea? a supercontinent that was theoretically a combination of all of our current continents
What is a mass extinction? where many types of living things become extinct at the same time
When did the earliest forms of life appear? Precambrian Time
Most fossils form when organisms die and are buried in what? Sedimentary rock
Which era is often called the Age of Reptiles? Mesozoic era
Organisms that spend part of their lives in water and part on land are called what? amphibians
What are mammals? warm-blooded vertebrates which feed milk to their young
What occurred at the end of the Cretaceous Period? Mass extinction
What are animals without backbones called? Vertebrates
Humans appeared in what era? Cenozoic Era
