| chemical weathering | the process that breaks down rock through chemical changes |
| abrasion | the grinding away of rock by other rock particles carried by water,ice , or wind |
| frost wedging | process that splits rocks when water seeps into cracks and then freezes and expands |
| oxidation | a chemical change in which a substance combines with oxgen as when iron oxidizes forming rust. |
| permeable | characteristic of material that contains connected air spaces or pores,that water can seep through easily |
| bedrock | rock that makes up earths crust solid rock layer |
| decomposer | a organism that gets energy from dead organisms |
| fertility | a measure of how well soil supports plant growth |
| humus | dark colored organic material in soil |
| loam | rich fertile soil that is made up of about equal parts of materials |

| soil | the loose,weathered material on earths surface in which plants can grow |
| soil horizon | a layer that differs in color and texture and composition |
| subsoil | consists of clay and other rock partials little humus |
| topsoil | crumbly dark brown soil that is a mixture of humus clat and other minerals |

| crop rotation | a farmer plants different crops in a field each year |
| contour plowing | farmers plow their fields along the curves of a slope instead of straight rows |
| conservation plowing | dead weeds and crops are tilled into the soil |
