acid | A chemical substance which releases hydrogen ions (H+) and has a pH of less than 7.0. |
alkali | A base which can be dissolved (is soluble) in water. |
base | A chemical substance that will remove hydrogen ions from solution. It has a pH of more than 7.0. |
chemical reaction | A process that occurs when chemical substances are changed into new substances. |
compound | A substance made of more than one type of atom, chemically combined in a fixed ratio. |
concentrated | A solution that has a large number of particles dissolved in it. |
corrosive | A substance that will damage the surface of another substance. |
density | The amount of mass (weight) an object has, in relation to its volume (the space it takes up). |
dilute | A solution that contains a small number of particles dissolved in it. |
indicator | A substance which will change colour according to the pH. |
ion | An atom which has lost or gained electrons. |
neutral | A substance with a pH of 7.0. It is not an acid or a base. |
neutralisation | A chemical reaction that occurs when an acid and base are combined to result in a pH of 7.0. |
salt | A chemical compound containing a metal ion and a non-metal ion. |
