Lab5-Hearing

QuestionAnswer
What does hearing involve? The perception of sound that travels as pressure waves thru the air
Describe the pressure waves of hearing 1. Longitudinal in nature 2. Form areas of air particle compression and rarefaction
What is the threshold of hearing in decibels? 0 decibels
How is sound intensity measured? Sound intensity is related to the height of the waves and is measured in decibels
Describe the decibel scale It is a logarithmic scale that means 30 decibels is 10x louder than 20 decibels and 100x louder than 10 decibels.
T/F The loudness of sound is a perceptive or subjective response by each individual True, however, a higher intensity in sound usually correlates with a higher perception of loudness
T/F Hearing loss results in sounds being more DIFFICULT to hear, thus the sound intensity is the SAME, but the loudness is decreased TRUE
What is the speed of sound traveling thru dry air at 20 degree Celsius? 343 meters per second (1125 ft/sec) OR 1236 km/hr (768 miles/hr)
What is pitch? Represents the wave's frequency and is measured in cycles per seconds or Hertz (Hz)
The normal human ear can perceive frequencies at what level? 20-20,000 Hz
Dogs and cats perceive pitches at what frequencies? 45,000 Hz and 85,000 Hz (respectively)
T/F Low frequency travels FARTHER through fluid True
T/F When the amplitude is LARGE, the hair cells generate MORE impulses TRUE
Describe Step 1-2 in the mechanism of hearing 1. Waves enter OUTER ear, vibrate TYMPANIC MEMBRANE 2. Malleus/incus/stapes (MIDDLE ear) amplify vibration around 15x the pressure exerted on tympanic membrane
Describe Step 3-4 in the mechanism of hearing 3. Stapes vibrates fluid w/in cochlea of INNER ear that finally activates hair cells in Organ of Corti 4. Impulses gnerated by hair cells are sent to brain via vestibulocochlear nerve for analysis in temporal lobe of cerebrum
T/F Hearing your own voice also involves receiving sound vibrations thru skull bones TRUE, the bone vibrations then activate the INNER ear where they are converted into nerve impulses
What are the wave types in the mechanism of hearing? Malleus/incus/stapes converts SOUND wave to MECHANICAL wave which is converted to FLUID waves in cochlea

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
