Axis An imaginary line around which a sphere, like a planet, rotates
Compass An instrument for determining directions, as by means of a freely rotating magnetized needle that indicates magnetic north
Day(s) The time between between sunrise and sunset on Earth
Horizon The line at which the Earth's surface and the sky appear to meet
Moon Earth's natural satellite
Night(s) The time between sunset and sunrise
North Pole One of the ends of an imaginary axle, called an axis, on which the Earth rotates. The North Pole always points towards the North Star .
North Star The star positioned directly over Earth's North Pole; also known as Polaris.
Opaque Matter through which light CANNOT travel
Orbit To move or travel around an object in curved path (can also be a noun, the path traveled)
Orientation The direction something points
Position A place where someone or something is located
Ray A line of light that travels straight out from a light source
Revolve To move in a circular orbit around another object. Earth revolves around the Sun.
Revolution To travel around something else in a circular path; orbit. It takes Earth ONE year to travel around the Sun.
Rotate To turn on an axis
Rotation Turning around on an axis. It takes Earth ONE day to complete.
Season A time of year that brings predictable weather conditions to a region on Earth.
Shadow The dark area behind an object that blocks light.
Stationary Still, DOES NOT move.
Sun The star at the center of the Solar System around which all of the Solar System objects orbit.
Sunrise A time in the morning when the Sun appears over the horizon. The Sun ALWAYS rises in the East.
Sunset A time in the evening when the Sun disappears under the horizon. The Sun AWAYS sets in the West.
